Harrison Public Schools recently held their Summer Reading 2026 Kickoff—to great reviews. An annual event, this year’s event was a massive success, with the largest turnout to date!
Designed to get younger students hooked on the joyful experience of reading, the event featured multiple stations to engage students in the myriad of literary experiences available to them. With picture book scavenger hunts, read-alouds, puppet making, guided drawing, board games, musical expression and more, students—along with their parents, rotated from station to station, partaking in a myriad of activities.
“I like reading the books! That’s my favorite, especially the pigeon books”, commented Kennedy school 1st grader, Yepson Suby.
Lincoln School 3rd grader Mikaela Herrick liked the action of it all. “The drawing and dancing make reading fun”, she said.
The event, pulled together by district staff, with a little help from the staff at the Harrison Public Library—who were there promoting their sumer reading program, Unearth a Story! (🔗http://bit.ly/3QNRk3f), was a true testament to the power of the community working together to ensure that our young readers get off to a solid start in life.
"I love that this gets families together. I also love that it makes kids aware of reading and gets them excited about it”, said Samantha Rowe, Lincoln School STEM teacher.
